Course Substitution and Waivers

Students with disabilities who are unable to complete regular course requirements should request, in consultation with DRC, the course modifications needed from their professors. Requests should be made as early as possible. DRC will cooperate with the student and the professor to secure appropriate accommodations.

A student can request a course substitution or waiver if a disability prevents him/her from successfully completing a required course.

The request must be done in writing specifying the course involved and should be reviewed and approved by the Vice President for Undergraduate Studies or the Department Chairperson and the academic Dean depending on the course. A determination of whether the failure to meet the requirement would result in a fundamental alteration of the academic program, will be made as part of the waiver procedure.

Upon receiving the request, DRC must be contacted to confirm the existence of the disability and its effect on the students ability to meet the requirements. Students who are not registered with DRC, and who wish to receive consideration for a course substitution/waiver, shall provide documentation of their disability to DRC. Approval of a substitution or waiver should be sent to Registration and Records so the substitution can be noted on the SASS degree audit as an approved substitution.

DRC will assist Undergraduate Studies and the academic departments in identifying courses which are likely to require substitution to meet the need of students with disabilities, and in developing realistic alternatives. DRC will identify functional limitations present in specific disabilities, and advise departments on how to match course requirements with the limitations to best meet the needs of the students while maintaining the academic integrity of the program.
