In the postsecondary educational environment a student with a disability is required to self- identify and complete a thorough intake process. The university is then legally obligated to provide services and academic accommodations to qualified students. The DRC strongly encourages students to make the determination of accommodation requests at the beginning of each semester.

Determining impairments and major life activities is relatively straight forward. Measuring what constitutes a substantial limitation is the complex aspect of determining disability. It's important to note, that not everyone with impairment is disabled. Only those whose impairments rise to the level of "substantial limitations are qualified as disabled.

Students have an obligation to present documentation substantiating that they have an impairment that is a substantial limitation to a major life activity. The university can question the documentation if the person is not an expert; the person is not treating the student; and if a diagnosis is without supporting data. The university can request additional information if documentation is incomplete. The university does not have to take any action until the student provided appropriate documentation.
